Day #2, 2017! 5 Steps to Keeping on Track

Can you believe it? 2017!

It’s so cliché, but time REALLY does fly. My plan is to make the most — on EVERY level — of 2017. This T2D will beat the hell out of her A1C.  🙂

Cleaning out my refrigerator and freezer is how I started my day. Then, I moved on to food shopping to be sure my cupboards are filled with healthy choices. NO excuses!

I made a batch of sugar-free raspberry Jello, in an effort to be prepared when the sugar beast invades my brain! Sugar-free jello seems to calm “him” down.

I have visions of him “dancing in my head” — NOT “sugar-plum fairies,” the Sugar BEAST! But, it’s okay. I’m prepared to “take care of him” in 2017. BRING IT ON, BEAST!  🙂

Next on my agenda is to create a pot of piping hot Vegetable Barley Soup. It’s threatening to get colder here in the Northeast, and I’ll be ready.  I love to make soup and freeze individual portions. It just makes life easier, and the individual portions help to keep my blood sugar levels in check.

My walking buddy and I conferred and we’re starting 2017 off on the “right foot” (pun intended)!  We’ll have to walk the mall, but it really doesn’t matter as long as one foot is planted firmly in front of the other! Walking is the #1 way to lower my blood sugar — works EVERY time.

Monitoring my blood sugar has to be at the top of my list, even though it’s a ROYAL pain in the butt. The bottom line is that I know when I write it down (my definition of “monitoring”), I have a MUCH better chance of staying on track.

 

So, here’s how 2017 is shaking out thus far. I will be keeping on track by following these 5 STEPS:

  1.  Keeping diabetes-friendly foods, not just in the cabinets but, prepared to eat at any time.
  2. Maintaining awareness of the SUGAR BEAST lurking around every corner.
  3. Preparing and freezing individual portions of foods. Portion control is imperative, if I am to succeed on this journey.
  4. Exercising: God bless my “walking buddy,” Maureen,  — she keeps me accountable. You too can have one — ask around!
  5. Monitoring my blood sugar.

There are MANY PATHS we can take on this journey

with lots twists and turns and forks in the road but, with the support of other Type 2 Diabetics, I believe we can make healthy choices and be successful.

There are a multitude of  choices — let’s take the right path towards a healthy diabetic life!

WHY? Why? why?

Forgive me for what may seem like I’m climbing on a soapbox.  Diary of a Dedicated Diabetic is, however, a blog about taking care of ourselves.  These words are about our taking care as individuals, and as a country.

It’s been difficult to write about anything positive amid the sadness of the world . The terror that took place in San Bernadino, California, this past week is just overwhelming,  especially with Paris and Brussels, barely in the background.

To hear people speaking about “another” mass murder caused my heart to break.  I no longer want to hear the statistics of these events.  I don’t want to listen to, or engage in, conversations that use words like, “so sad, unbelievable, and what can we do?” These conversations bring a sense of helplessness, and I don’t believe that we’re helpless.  We are not victims!

We, in the United States, are members of a democracy.  I’m so grateful for that.  But, because we live in a democratic nation, we CAN do something.  We can call and write our Congresspeople.  We can voice our concerns and opinions.  We can and must demand that they take actions to make and keep our schools, malls, churches, movie theaters, and workplaces SAFE!  We should and must expect them to listen and act — for the good of all.

And now — about diabetes.  Type 2, in my case.

Making good choices and taking care of ourselves on every level is imperative. Last Thursday night, I made a great choice!  I went to a seminar on diabetes that focused on the Holidays.  One of the handouts was titled, “Holiday Season Eating.”   🙂

First of all, the presenter was excellent.  She was a diabetes educator/registered dietician and really knew her stuff.  Her presentation was filled with information and helpful hints; we left with a packet of healthier recipes; time well spent.

There was much discussion about portion control (happily, without using those words). Non-starchy vegetables were encouraged. She reminded us that  1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked non-starchy veggies = 5 grams of carbs. LOTS of choices — no need for that feeling of deprivation.  IMG_3417

A four-page, double-sided folder was given to us as an easy-to-read chart of everything you always wanted to know about good choices, for the person who has diabetes.  It’s in a simple format that makes preparation quick and easy.  Speaking of preparation, there was a lot of discussion about its importance (We knew that!  Do we do it? Not necessarily…) but,  Heather placed it right up to the front of our minds.  Thank you!

This was the first time, EVER, that I didn’t want a diabetes education seminar to end. There was much more information to pass along to you. I’ll do that in future blogs — promise!

There’s No Justice!

On my way home today, I stopped at my local Stop and Shop.  LIST in hand 🙂 I entered the store completely focused.

  1. paper goods
  2. tomatoes
  3. 3 small bananas
  4. 1/2 lb. roast beef
  5. dish detergent
  6. flowers

That’s it — I’m done.

Moving down the aisle from the deli section on my way to the check out line, two wagons blocked my way. No one was paying attention, so I took a detour to the left.  It was the bakery area, but I knew I was o.k.  The showcase was to my left, so I looked to the right as I passed it (Just to be on the safe side — trying to avoid temptation.)

“Miss, Miss, excuse me.  Miss!”  I turned to my left and a frail, elderly lady was smiling at me.  She was standing, slightly hunched over, in front of the showcases filled with you know what.  I’m tall, so I’m used to people asking me to get them items from the high shelves. But, there were no shelves.

“I don’t know what to do,” she said, appearing to be confused.

“How can I help you?”

And then it began. A LONG story, with much pointing out of the various pastries.

“I’m having 5 people over for bridge today.  So far I have this,” she said, pointing to the container of fruit in her cart. “But I can’t decide what pastries to get.  Do you think two of the tarts, two of the giant chocolate cookies and maybe eight of the rainbow cookies would be enough?”

My mouth began to salivate, “I’m sorry, I really don’t know.” I started to walk away.

“Wait, please, I really need your help,” she pleaded.  “Maybe I should get the mini chocolate ganache cakes too. What do you think?”

THERE’S NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLDthat’s what I think!

I took a deep breath and said, “Maybe you should ask the baker, she’s the expert.” I started to scoot away.  “Wait,” she called out. I turned and pointed to the woman behind the counter. “She’s right there; she’ll be able to answer your questions.”

I took off like a bat out of hell! Once on line, I checked out my items and was on my way.  Before leaving, I glanced over at the bakery section. She was still there, debating with the baker. I smiled

Walking to the car, I gave myself a virtual pat on the back. I made it out — sugar free.  Good for me!

Another battle won.  One day at a time.

Be On Guard!

The other day I completed a ton of chores and on the way home I decided to stop at the deli.  I love their Light Vegi Tuna (very little mayo; perfect for lunch).  Of course, there was a line, so I focused on what I was getting — nothing else.

As I waited on line, my eyes wandered into a basket of homemade baked goods.  A brownie topped by the crumbs of a crumb cake, drenched in confectioners sugar, caught my eye.  Interesting.  Seriously, I’ve never see that before.  My “crazy self” screamed, Buy it — try it — one isn’t going to kill you.  Along came the guy with my tuna.  “Anything else, ma’am?”  “No thanks, I’m good,” came out of my mouth.  And then, my hand inched its way over to the basket of goodies.  “Wait, I’ll take one of these.” Money exchanged hands — similar to a drug deal…  I took my small bag and drove home, not giving a thought to what I’d just done.

Once in the house, I removed the tuna and the brownie/crumb cake from the brown paper bag.  I still can’t believe what I did.  I put the tuna in the refrigerator and the brownie on a plate.  I sat down at my dining room table, read the newspaper, and ate the brownie. When I was done, I looked up, much like an alcoholic coming out of a stupor, and thought, What did I do?  It was pretty amazing.  I don’t even LIKE crumb cake, and frankly, I couldn’t tell you what the brownie tasted like.  I paid no attention while I was eating. I likened myself to an alcoholic in a blackout, I barely remembered eating it — I swear, it was really strange. I felt awful; remorse took over.  I yelled at myself, vowing never to let my guard down again. Physically, I felt like garbage, not unlike the junk I had ingested.  All this over a brownie! I took a nap. 

Hindsight is a great thing.  I knew better, but I did it anyway.  I went into that deli hungry — bad decision. I let my guard down. When it comes to food, I realize that I need structure. Planning is the key to success, and I certainly didn’t do it that day. For the most part, my failures regarding my diabetes regimen are centered around a lack of planning.

O.K., I lost that battle, but NOT the war.  So, moving forward, get out that LIST, Kathy, and PLAN.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. One day at a time!

Ugh!

Today was pitiful. Some days I just can’t get it together — today was that day. Other than drinking a lot of water, I did absolutely nothing right in the food department. Nothing. Not a vegetable in sight. No fruit, no walking, nothing positive. It was bad, really bad.

So, finally, at about four o’clock, I put my big girl pants on, wiped the sugar off my mouth, and headed out to the food store. Enough of this crap, Kathy — grow up, I said to myself.

Everyday IS Day One — no matter what!

Shopping as a diabetic high on carbs, is hilarious. (Well, depending on your perspective.) I found myself complaining about the price of apples. Mind you, I wasn’t bemoaning the price of cookies, when I bought that garbage this morning. Stop it; just buy them, the healthy me cried. I did — Galas, Goldens, Honeycrisps, and Braeburns –– two of each! I love the variety.

Moving on to the fish department, I stood in front of the counter, staring at each one straight in the eye. “You’re WAY to expensive! Ridiculous!”  Interesting, each looked back at me, but none of them replied. “What? Salmon, swordfish, flounder can’t speak? What’s the problem? No backbone? Stand up for yourself!”  Alas, each remained horizontal, basking in the coolness of the ice; ignoring my rant. The fishmonger looked away.

Because I resented their “attitude,” I decided to buy them. “I’ll have one of this, two of that, cut that in half, please.” I ran up the bill — I’ll fix them; I’ll eat them — every damn one of them, I screamed, in my own head.

Exhausted, I stepped over to the vegetables. Do you know what asparagus cost? Get over it!  I did, and I filled my cart with a variety of incredible colors. A veritable rainbow of vegetables.

When I returned home, I took a quick nap (carb coma, I guess). Then, into the kitchen to prepare an epicurean delight on which to base another Day One. For me Day One can begin at any time of the day — as long as it begins.

Tomorrow will be another day. I will start out on the right foot, and move through the day making wise food decisions. This DEDICATED DIABETIC will move forward, one day at a time, sometimes one meal at a time, determined to win this battle. My blood sugar will drop to an appropriate level, thanks to the walk I will take first thing in the morning. All will be well.

I am determined and definitely dedicated to bringing this disease under control!
