BREAKING NEWS! “President Barack Obama quotes K. Keevins.”

At the end my last post (The Effect of Weather on Appetite), I stated, “We’re going to be just fine.” Of course I was directing my comment to Type 2 Diabetics and was talking about food and it’s consumption during the cold months of winter.

Moments ago, while watching our President’s last press conference, I heard him quote me — yes, ME! He wasn’t discussing food. He was speaking about the (future) state of our Union, when he said, “We’re gonna be okay.”   [copy cat! :)]

Then he went on to sprinkle words of hope at us, the way he does in that patriotic manner. I agree with him — HOPE is where it’s at.

 

I’m injecting HOPE into my Type 2 Diabetes Treatment Plan as the PRIMARY factor in my success. Hope is such a positive word, isn’t it? I don’t mean, “I HOPE I’m successful.” I DO mean that, no matter if I slip and slide along my journey, I’ll always hold the hope that I will succeed — I WILL succeed ONE DAY AT A TIME.

President Obama also used the word vigilant. That’s a term that fits into my plan perfectly! I will be vigilant — about monitoring my blood glucose, about exercising, and I will be most vigilant regarding my food intake — healthy choices are the way to go.

“The absence of hope is despair.” Who said that??? There will be no despair on my part, no matter how I may struggle along this journey. I’ll win the battles and eventually the war against diabetes. YOU will too!

Thanks, President Obama, for your last minute words of inspiration.  I needed the reminder to be hopeful and vigilant in life (in general), as well as in my life with diabetes. Timing is everything!

I will NEVER give up! Diabetes is a royal pain in the ass, but I will NEVER give up!

It’s about ten minutes since my last post and I’m on my way to bed. I’m wiped out. If you read my last post, you’ll see why I have some nerve being tired.

Today is Sunday. It’s another day. It’s going to be a great day and I will, for sure, start off with a really GOOD ATTITUDE. My plan is to start out with an attitude of gratitude and move on from there!

Turning the clock back and, with the extra hour in the morning, I’m hoping to get my sleep schedule on track. I’d love to say, “BACK on track,” but that wouldn’t be truthful. My sleep patterns/habits are horrendous — I’m a night owl. I’ve tried to change that for years, but to no avail.

Going to bed at a decent time is the most difficult part for me. As an adult, I’ve always gone to bed after midnight. My sleep pattern is usually somewhere between 3 to 5 hours, if I’m lucky. I’ve tried developing a routine; i.e., early to bed, early to rise… A cup of hot caffeine-free tea, a dull book, meditation, a warm bath, ocean sounds,  DSCN0467a mist of lavender spray, or a warm shower before bed. I’ve set the alarm for an early hour, with the plan of starting my day with a walk. Up and at ’em, is what I’ve attempted. “Attempted” is the operative word. Attempted, but with little or no success.  😦

WHY is this so important to me???  I believe that sleep, or the lack thereof, effects everything — including diabetes.

So, with that in mind, this Type 2 Diabetic is off to bed. Wish me luck!

 

 

DIABETES — It’s Complicated…

…but, I’m using my BRAIN!  You know, to sort things out, organize my diabetic needs, in the interest of good health.  In my prior post, I spoke about responsibility.  Sleep habits, healthy foods, and exercise, fall into that category and MUST be a priority in my life and, I  accept complete responsibility for each sector.  This really IS the way to good diabetes management and great glucose levels.

I walked this morning — first thing.  Ugh. I hated every minute, but I did it; NO CHOICE.

Started WALKING — again!

Food planning, I’ve FINALLY accepted it is imperative to avoid “slips.” I went shopping today with lunch and dinner menus a priority.  My freezer is chock full of chicken and fish, so my basket was filled mostly with vegetables and fruits.

Breakfast is the most difficult meal of the day for me. Why? Chocolate chip pancakes, waffles, of course!  Either would be my choice. This is the ONE MEAL that is a problem for me, and it’s not a new dilemma. I’m allergic to eggs, so there’s that. I like most foods, but my issue is the consistency of some of them — cottage cheese, for example, oatmeal, yogurt, anything mushy or gushy — I just can’t get them down.  What to do? Any suggestions? The “most important meal of the day” (or so THEY say) is the one that I can’t seem to resolve. HELP! PLEASE, I’m pleading with you! 

 

Regarding organization, new recipes are vital for me to keep interested in food preparation;  I’ve been scouting the Internet for different ones.  I’ll share of my T2D epicurean delights, as I make them  🙂  Variety is the spice of life!

I’m determined and dedicated to use my BRAIN to carve out my path to successful diabetes management!

It can be COMPLICATED —

I’m speaking about my computer “complications” — that’s why I’ve been missing in action for a little while.

NOTHING frustrates me more than when all does NOT go well with my “toys” (laptop, iPad, iPhone).  Ah, yet another addiction.  For some reason, nothing is syncing.  Therefore, I can’t post pictures on my blog, at this time (using some “old” ones — sorry); I’m unable to write and send my work out — e-mail issue (I’ve been doing battle with aol about that).  Why do the companies blame each other? I’m determined that by the weekend, my toys will be back on track!

Okay, my title is “It can be COMPLICATED,” and of course you know that diabetes is complicated — whether it be Type 1 or 2.  I’m Type 2, so that’s what I’ll be discussing, and I’ll be surprised if you can’t relate.  {By the way, I realize that we all DO really know the answers to my questions and reasons for my frustration; somehow, it’s still FRUSTRATING.}

This is not a discussion about the medical complications resulting from diabetes — I’m not there and grateful for it. This is simply a discussion about how complicated and frustrating the management of it can be…and what we can DO about that.

The ups and downs of blood glucose ARE complicated — at least to this Dedicated Diabetic, as proven by many posts to this blog (Diary).  Sometimes it’s simple, I write everything down, walk — my blood sugar goes down = Perfecto!  Other times, I end up in the hospital, for something completely unrelated, I walk the halls like a maniac in an attempt to keep my numbers down.  Result = They go up anyway.  Never fails.

You know how it goes.  I go to bed with a 99 and wake up with a 130!  Am I sleep-eating?  AAarrrggghhh!

It just is the way it is.  It’s a puzzle — even though I’ve read the books, met with the doctors, attended the seminars, blah, blah, blah.  Is this reaction a lack of acceptance? I wonder?  I find it hard to believe, but I’ll be delving into that further in the next few days.

As far as what to “do” about it. I’m just going to keep on keeping on, examining advice from others in this boat, and doing the right things to manage this crazy thing called diabetes.  I AM and will continue to be DEDICATED, determined.

Hey Kathy, I scream out at the top of my lungs — SHUT UP AND BE GRATEFUL!

THOSE UPS AND DOWNS!

“ROLLERCOASTER RIDE” is how I’ve described Diabetes in the past.  Well, I’m on a wicked ride right now.  Ugh — the cravings!

I’m doing everything I know to eat properly, but I’m still being haunted by cravings.  Today, a friend, who’s an expert on alternatives, suggested that I try Essence of Grapefruit — “just a few drops on your finger — smell it.”  She gave me this recommendation after I had inhaled a cinnamon bun.  (Better to sniff grapefruit, my dear…)  🙂      Of course, I’ll be going out soon to scout out some EofG.  I’ll let you know. photo

The topic came up via a conversation on acupuncture.  I had accupuncture many years ago for severe pain in my elbow and shoulder.  It was a last resort and, I have to tell you, it worked!  So when another friend who was probably sick of my whining about the torture of cravings said, “How about acupuncture, it worked for you the last time?” I decided, Why not?

My yoga instructor recommended an acupuncturist, and I made an appointment pronto.  Last Wednesday I took the plunge.  I was slightly skeptical (I guess because I wasn’t doing it for pain.) and a little anxious, but I dove in. Susan, a licensed acupuncturist, explained everything — did you know there are various types of acupuncture? Chinese, Japanese, Korean  (probably more).  I was familiar only with the Chinese form. By the end of the session, I had 14 needles placed at various points — incredible.  She also threw in a little Reiki; to get rid of some “areas of energy.”  O.K., I’m game.  Before leaving me for what seemed to be about 15 minutes, she covered me with a FOIL blanket. (What???)  She said, “You won’t think you’ll need this now, but it will keep you warm.”  I wasn’t cold, but O.K.  Within a few minutes, I was chilly (What???).  Honest!  But that soon passed and I was warm again.  I guess, thanks to the blanket.

While horizontal on the table — needled and blanketed — I couldn’t help but think, You really WILL do anything to get rid of those cravings.  At end of the session, Susan placed two seeds (Vaccaria Seeds) that are imbedded in tiny bandaids, on points (on my ears) that relate to cravings.  Because I was having a wicked bout of allergies, she also placed a minuscule magnet (embedded into another tiny bandaid) on the “webbed” area between my thumb and index finger. I was told to keep them on until they fell off  on their own (they did — in the shower — in two days).

I have NO idea whether or not this will work, but the cravings are driving me up the wall, so I’m willing to try.  That was Wednesday morning and on Sunday morning, I downed the cinnamon bun. I have another appointment scheduled for Thursday.  These things take time.

Ugh!

Today was pitiful. Some days I just can’t get it together — today was that day. Other than drinking a lot of water, I did absolutely nothing right in the food department. Nothing. Not a vegetable in sight. No fruit, no walking, nothing positive. It was bad, really bad.

So, finally, at about four o’clock, I put my big girl pants on, wiped the sugar off my mouth, and headed out to the food store. Enough of this crap, Kathy — grow up, I said to myself.

Everyday IS Day One — no matter what!

Shopping as a diabetic high on carbs, is hilarious. (Well, depending on your perspective.) I found myself complaining about the price of apples. Mind you, I wasn’t bemoaning the price of cookies, when I bought that garbage this morning. Stop it; just buy them, the healthy me cried. I did — Galas, Goldens, Honeycrisps, and Braeburns –– two of each! I love the variety.

Moving on to the fish department, I stood in front of the counter, staring at each one straight in the eye. “You’re WAY to expensive! Ridiculous!”  Interesting, each looked back at me, but none of them replied. “What? Salmon, swordfish, flounder can’t speak? What’s the problem? No backbone? Stand up for yourself!”  Alas, each remained horizontal, basking in the coolness of the ice; ignoring my rant. The fishmonger looked away.

Because I resented their “attitude,” I decided to buy them. “I’ll have one of this, two of that, cut that in half, please.” I ran up the bill — I’ll fix them; I’ll eat them — every damn one of them, I screamed, in my own head.

Exhausted, I stepped over to the vegetables. Do you know what asparagus cost? Get over it!  I did, and I filled my cart with a variety of incredible colors. A veritable rainbow of vegetables.

When I returned home, I took a quick nap (carb coma, I guess). Then, into the kitchen to prepare an epicurean delight on which to base another Day One. For me Day One can begin at any time of the day — as long as it begins.

Tomorrow will be another day. I will start out on the right foot, and move through the day making wise food decisions. This DEDICATED DIABETIC will move forward, one day at a time, sometimes one meal at a time, determined to win this battle. My blood sugar will drop to an appropriate level, thanks to the walk I will take first thing in the morning. All will be well.

I am determined and definitely dedicated to bringing this disease under control!
